The Windsor Police Financial Crimes Branch have received several complaints from members of the community in relation to an online tax refund scam e-mail.

Recipients are receiving e-mails that appear to be from “Canada Revenue Agency” with an address similar to refund-tax @ gc.ca  The subject line of the email is :Your tax refund online

The e-mail will indicate that an error has been identified in your taxes amounting to a refund of “X” amount of dollars.  Usually in the $500.00 – $700.00 range but could be more or less.  The email directs you to create a Tax Gateway account in order to credit your bank account with the specified amount.  In the body of the e-mail there is a “get started” link witch will take you to a separate page containing necessary *fields that are required to be filled in.  Included in the fields are Social Insurance Number and bank account information.

With the information, the fraudsters are now able to apply for credit etc. in your name.  Police are warning the community about the latest scam.  We remind people to remain vigilant when it comes to any type of unsolicited e-mail.  Revenue Canada would never require you to submit this type of information to them online.
