In a statement issued by Alberta Health Services, they have confirmed that two new cases of measles to have emerged in Calgary as the outbreak of virus grows over into a number of communities throughout Canada. The statement issued on Wednesday said that even though the two cases are connected, they are not travel-related.
One of the cases is an infected Calgary high school student, who has prompted school officials to take precautionary measures and warn students and parents to keep an eye for flu-like symptoms because they could be an early indicator of the measles. Consequently, Western Canada High School students were immediately offered the vaccination in case they hadn’t already had their measles shots. Health officials advised those students who were not vaccinated, or have had recently received their vaccination, to stay home for at least two weeks until the risk of infection at the school is over.
Authorities revealed that the two cases are fifth and sixth in Calgary this year, and the latest in a string of outbreaks reported in western Canada, the Prairies and Ontario. According to them, British Columbia’s eastern Fraser Valley are suffering from an outbreak that has resulted in almost 320 confirmed cases, though they added that it is largely contained and the spread of the virus into other communities has been limited. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s public health officials have confirmed 11 measles cases since the beginning of the year and the authorities confirmed in mid-March that the outbreak was over.
