Toronto Police has confirmed that 25-year-old Shmar Parris, of Toronto, was shot dead while in the driver’s seat of a Chevrolet Malibu after multiple shots were fired near Mutual and Gerrard Sts. around 2:20 a.m. According to Const. Victor Kwong, the Chervolet Malibu was chased by a light-coloured SUV soon after the gunshots were fired.

Kwong explained that Parris was found suffering from “multiple” gunshot wounds almost 10 minutes later inside the bullet-riddled Malibu that crashed into a hydro pole a few blocks away at Parliament and Carlton Sts. Thereafter, Parris was shifted to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. In addition to that, a woman accompanying Parris in the passenger of the Malibu was also shot. Kwong stated that “she suffered non-life threatening injuries and was able to make her own way to hospital where she is currently being treated for a gunshot wound.”

A witness of the incident who lives at the Neill-Wycik co-op on Gerrard St., 24-year-old Alyssa Alanguilan, shared that she was awakened to the sound of gunshots. She revealed that “I heard about five pops” and added that “I’ve heard shots before living in this area – but never this clear or this many.” Furthermore, Neill-Wycik alleged that “it’s scary because I live here and I go grocery shopping right near where the shooting happened.” According to Kwong, the SUV drove away “erractically” heading south on Parliament, whereas other witnesses report that it was last seen travelling west along the Gardiner Expresway.
