Following through with the threat she made earlier, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has served both Progressive Conservative Leader, Tim Hudak, and Nepean-Carleton MPP, Lisa MacLeod, with a libel notice for their comments that alleged that she was involved in the gas plants scandal. According to the libel notice, Hudak and MacLeod made false and defamatory statements while alleging that the premier had a role in the destruction of emails and documents related to the gas plant scandal.

Earlier in the week, Wynne openly braved up to Hudak and asked him to back up his “false” and defamatory allegations or face legal action. The 18-page libel notice issued on Friday primarily includes a letter from Wynne lawyer and former deputy attorney-general of Ontario, Mark Freiman, who listed a number of statements by Hudak and MacLeod which Wynne considers libelous. Consequently, a transcript of a March 27 press conference with Hudak and MacLeod is enclosed, along with an article on the Ontario PC website that repeats some of the allegations and an email sent out by the party.

In addition to that, the libel notice also highlights a March 27 tweet by MacLeod which says: “watching the news. Got to see the Kathleen Wynne ‘I am not a crook’ Richard Nixon impression during her 3rd press conference again.” According to the libel notice, the tweet “had the following meanings…: a) the Premier is a crook; b) the Premier is engaged in a cover-up; and c) the Premier is as deserving (of) hatred and contempt as Richard Nixon.”
