Several inside sources have revealed that Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne plans to give NDP Leader, Andrea Horwath, an inflexible deadline to decide whether she intends to support this year’s budget or trigger a spring election. Sources say that the deadline will be announced by the Liberals later on Thursday afternoon and is expected to be one week. In addition to that, it is speculated that in case Ms. Horwath procrastinates and remains undecided until then, Ms. Wynne may call an election herself.
Wynne adopted similar technique for the past two budgets in order to prevent Ms. Horwath from delaying the decision and obtaining more time in the spotlight. On the other hand, the New Democrat Leader refused to address the media on Thursday, which is not her way as she usually remains in contact with the press during the budget lock-up. In fact, her office alleged that she would not respond to the budget until Friday morning. The Liberals budget contains several NDP-friendly programs including an Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, billions for hospitals, schools and subways, and increased funding for social programs with pay hikes for personal support workers. However, Ms. Horwath has not announced her support for the spending plan yet.
Finance Minister Charles Sousa also reportedly alleged that “we will ask the opposition to come clean as to what they want to do. Let’s move on with it” because “if the opposition wants to go to the polls, then we’ll take this to the people of Ontario.”
