Ontario voters are going to have an evident and long-coming reelection next month. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and her party’s refusal to support the budget tabled by Premier Kathleen Wynne’s minority Liberals has triggered a much anticipated June election.

Addressing the press about the budget for the first time Friday morning, Horwath said it’s time for a change in the province. She mentioned that “I have lost confidence in Kathleen Wynne and her ability to deliver.” NDP leader said at Queen’s Park that “I cannot in good conscience support a government that people don’t trust anymore.” Horwath stated that “it’s time for a change . . . we will be voting against this budget.” According to Horwath, a budget in which the government “threw (in) the kitchen sink” was not enough to keep her on side with the Liberals. Speaking of the fiscal blueprint, she alleged that “it’s a mad dash to escape the scandals by promising the moon and the stars.”

Ontario Liberals failed to obtain Horwath’s vote of confidence despite fulfilling several NDP demands in last spring’s budget including faster home care for seniors, lower auto insurance rates and a financial accountability office. During the 20-minute news conference, Horwath said that the minority Liberals have been “high on promises and low on delivery,” making it time to pull the plug on NDP support. In response to a query, Horwath declined to reveal any of her election platform, saying that is “for another day.”
