During a radio interview on Monday morning, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath defended her ‎decision to not support a minority Liberal budget that assured more money for low-paid workers and welfare recipients, and triggered June 12 election. Horwath stated that “it isn’t just about the details of the budget.” In response to the queries from the president of Canada’s largest private-sector union, Unifor, Horwath replied that “I do not have any confidence whatsoever … these Liberals can deliver.”

President of the union representing autoworkers and others, i.e. Unifor, Jerry Dias, mentioned earlier on the show that Horwath made a poor decision for a leader who supported previous two Liberal budgets in exchange for gains that helped working people by pressing for shorter waits for home care and lower auto insurance rates. Dias alleged that “this budget was a win-win for working class people,” adding that “when politics is more important than direction then I have to start to second guess.”

Explaining her point of view on the show, Horwath alleged that she’s still ‎waiting for the Liberals to practically fulfil promises made in the previous budgets. She said that “there’s still people waiting weeks and weeks and weeks to get what they need” in home care supports to stay in their own homes and out of hospitals or nursing homes. Wynne’s budget rejected by Horwath mainly included an increase in welfare payouts and $4 hourly raises to personal support workers in home care who now make $12.50.
