Ontario Liberal Leader, Kathleen Wynne, has harshly criticized the New Democrats leader, Andrea Horwath, for claiming that she intends to privatize the Toronto Transit Commission. During a radio interview on Monday morning, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath alleged that Wynne plans to expand the privatization of such public services. In response to the claims made by Horwath, Wynne stated that “let’s just be clear: that’s a made-up comment because we have never ever — I have never ever — talked about privatizing the TTC so I have no idea where Andrea Horwath is getting that idea.” Wynne added that “she’s making it up. It’s just not true.”

Wynne’s reciprocating comments came after Horwath alleged that the Liberals plan to introduce more privatization into the city’s public transit system. Apparently, NDP referred to the fact that the new Eglinton Crosstown LRT is planned to be bankrolled by private-public partnership. Both Wynne and her controversial predecessor, Dalton McGuinty, made use of they call “alternative financing and procurement,” which allows private companies and pension funds to invest in public projects.

Addressing the audience at Richmond Hill High School, the Liberal leader insisted that’s not privatization. According to Wynne’s statement “that’s very distinct from the alternative financing process that we have in place, which, yes, it does allow for the private sector and the public sector to work together, but public ownership is a cornerstone of that model.” She added that “the idea that our agenda is to privatize is just not accurate.”
