A chair of the Reasonable Accommodation commission, Gerard Bouchard, has demanded several members of the Parti Quebecois, especially Bernard Drainville, to resign from the National Assembly. According to Bouchard, Bernard Drainville did not only act irresponsibly, but also had “sinister” intention when he dealt with immigrants and members of ethnic minorities in Quebec.

Bouchard most importantly highlighted that Drainville mislead the public about the nature of the legal opinions that Drainville used to promote the Charter of Values. Bouchard made the demand for resignation in an open letter published in La Presse, which was translated later into English by CJAD. Bouchard is one of the men who crisscrossed the province of Quebec in 2007 and 2008 as part of the commission on reasonable accommodations. He reiterated in the letter that the party needs “a major cleanup.”

Bouchard, whose brother Lucien led the PQ for many years, mentioned in the letter that ex-Premier Pauline Marois and Bernard Drainville are the main reasons why the PQ was disgraced, and since Marois has already resigned he is “waiting for Drainville to do as much.” However, in response to Bouchard’s demand, Drainville mentioned straight forwardly that he will not resign and also added that instead he is proud of his actions in promoting the highly divisive bill. He mentioned during a radio interview that “when it comes to the Charter I will not renounce anything, I am proud of what we did and time will justify our actions.”
