An Algerian native fighting deportation, Mohamed Harkat, recently mentioned after losing at the Supreme Court of Canada that Ottawa will have to send a coffin along with him because he will be tortured and killed. In his remarks after an attempt to nullify a security certificate, i.e. a warrant to deport non-citizens suspected of terrorism ties, Harkat alleged that he will keep fighting.

In a news conference, Harkat stated that “I am not threat to anybody, I just want a judge to recognize that and the government of Canada (to) recognize that.” Harkat and his wife, Sophie, were full with tears after a Supreme Court of Canada ruling on Wednesday upheld the country’s second try at legislating a swifter deportation regime for alleged terrorists or spies. Addressing the media, Harkat said that he goes to bed in tears after losing the final challenge to bar the use of secret CSIS evidence behind closed doors. Harkat highlighted that he now faces a real risk of torture if returned to Algeria after 19 years in Canada, especially since he has the stamp of terror suspect on his file.

Harkat stated that “I was expecting a fair and open trial so the ultimate goal yesterday it’s shattered,” and that he spent “twelve years awaiting for the highest court in the land to give me a fair and open trial to defend myself.” In addition to that, he alleged that “so basically what’s left now, if the government of Canada want to send me to Algeria they have to send me with a box; they going to torture me and bury me on it because the highest court uphold the certificates.”
