Prime Minister Stephen Harper mentioned in a statement issued on Thursday morning that he is deeply saddened by the death of an experienced soldier in a training accident at CFB Wainwright in Alberta. Lt.-Col. Dan Bobbitt passed away on Wednesday morning, when a light armoured vehicle rolled over. In addition to Bobbit, four other soldiers were injured in the accident too.
Mr. Harper stated that “on behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected by this tragedy, including all base personnel.” He added that “we also offer our prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured.” The prime minister alleged that the accident is a painful reminder that the members of the Canadian Armed Forces risk their lives every day, both in theatre or training in Canada. Harper mentioned that “his service to our country will be honoured and remembered.”
Bobbitt served as the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (2 RCHA), based in Garrison Petawawa, Ont. In addition to him, the four injured soldiers were also members of 2 RCHA. Col. Bobbitt is credited with experience of serving in a number of military roles over 25 years of service and completing multiple deployments to war zones. He was sent on a mission in Afghanistan in 2007 and two tours of Bosnia. Late Wednesday, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson offered his condolences in a statement. Bobbitt leaves behind a wife and three children.
