Air traffic control recording released by KHOU have revealed that two passenger planes, one of which was Vancouver-bound, got dangerously close to each another while taking off earlier this month at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The United Airbus A-320’s, each holding 150 passengers, were heading down separate runways on May 9 when they came within 400 feet of each other.
United Flight 601 was headed for Vancouver, Canada, and Flight 437 was headed for Mexico City when the two aircraft came worryingly close to disaster, but neither of the flight crew were aware of how grave the situation had become. An air traffic control recording showed that the Flight 601 was accidentally diverted into harm’s way just after the flight took off. The controller said that ‘Flight 601 turn right parallel traffic.’ Whereas, a Federal Aviation Administration source claimed that it should have turned left. The misdirection put Flight 601 directly in the path of Flight 437, and only 400 feet below it – the planes were less than a mile apart, and only a second or two from impact while at higher takeoff speeds, the source said.
Although the controller quickly realized situation and separated the planes, other pilots still saw what happened. One pilot can be heard asking another ‘Hey, you know what happened there?’ who replied ‘you all basically crossed directly over the top of each other.’ ‘That’s what it looked like from my perspective. I have no idea what was going on over there in the tower. But, you know, it was pretty gnarly looking,’ the first added.
