According to the court’s online court record, a suspect named Yosef Jomo Gopaul has been charged with murder in connection to the Julie Paskall case on Saturday. The records show that the judge ordered his detention on Saturday and scheduled his next court appearance for Monday.

In addition to that, a press briefing by The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) also confirmed on Friday evening that a suspect had been arrested. IHIT mentioned in a news conference held on Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. that a “significant development” has been made in connection to the murder. 53-year-old Paskall, a hockey mom, was brutally beaten in what investigators believe was an attempted robbery on Dec. 29, when she was picking up her son from the Newton Arena. Paskall spent days ailing in a hospital and failed to survive after all.  Paskall is survived by her husband Al, their 16-year-old son and two adult daughters. She was a volunteer with the Surrey Minor Hockey Association. Her murder was the 25th homicide in Surrey last year, which was a record for the city.

During an interview, Paskall’s sister-in-law called for the community to take its power back. She mentioned courageously that “I think that people need to take back their power, their own personal power, and that will help them take back their community.” In addition to that, she alleged that “we can’t take back Julie’s death, but we can take back the meaningless nature of her death.”
