Canada’s largest restaurant association, Restaurants Canada, has publicly demanded a one-on-one emergency meeting with Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to discuss the month-long moratorium on the foreign workers program. The association warned that in case the ban is not lifted soon, it will hurt the tourist season for events like the Calgary Stampede.
Restaurants Canada have presented their demands at a time when the government is almost about to finish revamping the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and is anticipated to announce them in the coming weeks. The owner of Calgary’s James Joyce Irish Pub and board member of Restaurants Canada, Gerard Curran, highlighted that the impact of the ban has been very hard on his staff and his business. He alleged that Ottawa needs to lift the moratorium before the coming tourist season. Mr. Curran explained that “we’re going into the tourist season,” and “this is the worst time to do this moratorium, especially in Calgary with Stampede. We don’t have the staff to man the restaurant the hours that we would like.”
Curran elucidated that if the situation persists, tourists visiting Alberta will be greeted with long lineups and slower service for everything from meals to a cup of coffee. He further added that this situation will result in less tax revenue for governments. He alleged that “I see all this starting to happen in Alberta.” He taunted, “don’t come to the restaurant and blame [us]. You should talk to the federal government because they’re the ones who put the moratorium on.”
Just yesterday, I dcomment_ID talk to the Jason Kenney’s office as Curran suggested. I told them to keep the moratorium on. James Joyce Irish Pub and other restaurants who are crying labour shortage have created their own fictitious shortage by not hiring and training Canadians since they became addicted to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. They have created their own mess and now want the government without making any investment in Canadians. If they go out of business. Oh Well. Someone with a proper business model will fill the vocomment_ID. So it is time for Curran and the industry to become competitive in their own market place and quit asking for handouts.
