The Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath promised to set aside $1,275 for caretaker tax credit in order to assist in the financial burden on people who are trying to keep a frail or ill family member at home. According to Horwath, the credit will be made available to needy recipients regardless of their income, and will be granted to especially those who are caring for someone who needs help with basic tasks.

While making the announcement, Horwath mentioned that “we want our family members to be able to live in dignity and to be able to stay at home with the family as long as possible.” Speaking with several families during a stop in north Toronto on Wednesday, Horwath comforted Rosanna Balducci who broke into tears while discussing the challenges of caring at home for a 29-year-old son with Down syndrome. NDP’s York West candidate, Tom Rakocevic, also revealed to have grown up with an ill father and alleged that “my mother was the only source of income in the household so we struggled to make ends meet.”

Lina Vescio explained that although the provincial government covers 75% of the cost of assisted devices, she still has to pay 25% of the bill for two hearing aids for her son that cost $3,000 each. The family also covers the expense of therapies needed to help the young man who is coping with cerebral palsy. Vescio complained that “we want them to be assets in society,” and added that “we want them to be independent.”
