In response to growing criticism by Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne, PC Leader Tim Hudak alleged that that Ontarians will not really miss the government job’s he plans to cut out. Upon inquiry about the impact of his campaign promise to cut 100,000 positions from the broader public service, Hudak explained that at least one-quarter of those jobs are going to disappear through natural attrition while the rest would be contracted out.

In addition to that, Hudak alleged that there is also a large chunk of bureaucracy that could be trimmed without impacting public services. Addressing the audience at the Canadian Club of Toronto on Friday, Hudak said that “you would be amazed at how much government you’re never going to miss.” Hudak has received criticism for his plans to cut 100,000 jobs out of the public sector without hurting services, and inquiries about how his “Million Jobs” plan could actually deliver that many new private sector positions. Most noticeably, Wynne recently challenged Hudak to find one expert who agreed with it, in response to which Hudak made a point of stressing his own educational background in economics.

Addressing the business crowd on Friday, Hudak alleged that if the province carried on running in debt at the current rate, currently over $270 billion, it would soon have to face hard decisions like those made in Greece where an economic crisis forced the country to slash its hospital budgets by 25%. Hudak said that if such situation arises, Ontario’s most vulnerable people, i.e. those with disabilities or in poverty, will be hurt the most.
