Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced to nominate Daniel Therrien as the next Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If the nomination is approved, Therrien will take charge of the key position from the current interim Privacy Commissioner, Chantal Bernier, who was relocated to serve in the position since the previous Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart’s term ended in December 2013.
Currently, Mr. Therrien is working as the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Public Safety, Defence and Immigration Portfolio, at the Department of Justice. Therrien started his career as Counsel to the Department of the Solicitor General of Canada, the Correctional Service of Canada and the National Parole Board. Thereafter, he received consistent promotions and ended up holding several key positions of increasing scope, complexity and responsibility, including Senior General Counsel and Director, Citizenship and Immigration Legal Services, at the Department of Justice; Director General, Refugee Policy, at Citizenship and Immigration Canada; and Manager, Legal Strategy and International Law, at the Department of Justice. Having completed Bachelor of Arts degree and a Licence en droit from the University of Ottawa, Mr. Therrien has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1981.
According to the fundamental rules of the Privacy Act, the nominee for the appointment must be approved by resolution of the Senate and House of Commons. Thereafter, pursuant to House of Commons Standing Order 111.1, the Government will have to table this nomination for referral to the appropriate Standing Committee.
