RCMP has confirmed that a Burnaby cyclist was shot in an allegedly random incident during a marathon bike ride on early Sunday. 59-year-old Craig Premack was one of the 40 participants riding in the Cache Creek 600, i.e. a 600-kilometre ride from Pitt Meadows up the Fraser Canyon to Cache Creek.

According to the police, Premack was riding his bike on Highway 1 south of Spences Bridge when a bullet pierced through his elbow just before 1 a.m. on Sunday. Another cyclist found him injured and immediately took him to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A club member who spoke on condition of anonymity said that “he’s in good spirits.” Premack is in stable condition, but will require reconstructive surgery to repair his arm. According to a statement issued by RCMP Southeast District Const., Kris Clark, so far the shooting appears to be random and the initial investigation revealed that the shooter fled the scene in a pickup truck. He alleged that “we’ve established the what, when and where” and so “the who and the why are still what we are trying to determine.”

The bike race organized by the B.C. Randonneurs Cycling Club started on Saturday morning in Pitt Meadows and took riders through Mission, Agassiz and the Fraser Canyon to Cache Creek, then back to Pitt Meadows. Reports confirm that Spences Bridge was about 350 km into the journey, from where on the riders had option to either stay the night or ride through the night.
