An Ottawa teenager accompanied by her family on a shopping trip to Syracuse passed away on Sunday in a crash on an upper New York State highway that also left other family members seriously injured. 14-year-old Carine Rabay died when she was thrown from an SUV being driven by her father, Joseph Rabay. Carine’s mother, 44-year-old Colette Rabay, 9-year-old sister Joelle Rabay, and grandmother Salwa Rabay were also injured.
Carine’s 50-yer-old father and 77-year-old grandmother also received treatment of injuries at Syracuse Hospital before being released. Whereas, her mother and younger child were flown to Upstate University Hospital, also in Syracuse, where the mother remained in serious condition on Monday night. According to New York State Police investigators, Joseph Rabay was driving north on Interstate 81 near the town of Pamelia, in Jefferson County, shortly after 4 p.m. when he lost control of the 2010 Toyota Sequoia. Thereafter the vehicle swiped from one lane to another, until Rabay drove onto the west shoulder of the highway where he hit a guardrail. Consequently, the SUV flipped over the guardrail and rolled down an embankment before landing upright in the median.
Senior Investigator at the New York State Police in Watertown, Michael Pastuf, explained that “he lost control of his vehicle for really no good apparent reason.” He added that traffic was fairly heavy but “there’s no alcohol, no drugs, no cellphone use, no speeding; none of those factors were involved.” The father has told police that another driver suddenly pulled in front of him and had to brake abruptly.
