An RCMP officer, Cpl. Greg Horton, has claimed that he suspects that suspended Sen. Mike Duffy’s hotel records in Prince Edward Island are bogus and hence will prove that he defrauded taxpayers with phony living expenses. Horton officially filed court documents to acquire court orders asking for authorization to access a series of hotel bills and other records from the Great George Hotel in Charlottetown.

According to Horton, the hotel receipts will confirm that Duffy didn’t live at his P.E.I. cottage, which is his declared as his primary residence, during the winter but instead stayed at the hotel when he was in P.E.I. Currently, the Senate has suspended Duffy as he is under investigation for breach of trust and fraud by accepting a government living allowance afforded to parliamentarians who don’t live in Ottawa. In his remarks, Horton said he believes Duffy lives in Ottawa, and not in his cottage in Cavendish, P.E.I. Sharing his investigation, Horton revealed that during the 16 winter months he examined, i.e. between 2009 and 2012, he could only identify 35 nights that Duffy spent in P.E.I. He said that “I cannot identity any night during that time period where (Duffy) stayed in his cottage in P.E.I.”

Horton pointed out that Duffy claims to live at the cottage during the summer but Duffy worked in Ottawa and stayed at a hotel when in P.E.I. during the winter. Therefore, he concluded that the claim that his cottage is his primary residence isn’t believable.
