According to a statement issued by the Sûreté du Québec on Tuesday morning, it confirmed to have been investigating a double homicide after police in the Gaspé region found two bodies in a car reported stolen earlier from Laval. It was explained that the bodies are of a woman and a child under the age of 10.

They bodies were found in a 1994 turquoise Dodge Shadow that was abandoned on Highway 132 in Routhierville, about 700 kilometres northeast of Laval. According to SQ Sgt. Claude Doiron, the car was discovered at around 7:15 p.m. in the Routhierville area, i.e. almost 45 minutes after police reported the car to have been involved in a hit and run in the nearby town of Causapscal. Doiron alleged that the car’s driver is allegedly missing, though he didn’t confirm whether the driver is a suspect or not.

According to a nearby resident, André Bélaieff, police visited the Matapédia River Lodge that he owns to ask if he had seen the car’s driver, a man described as five foot eight, with dark hair and wrinkled skin. He explained that “since yesterday it’s been non-stop police everywhere, and a helicopter.” Bélaieff, whose salmon fishing inn and outfitter is located across the Matapédia river, said if the driver tried to flee police by swimming in the river, things might have ended badly for him.” Bélaieff alleged that “he would have surely gotten hypothermia” because “the water is ice cold.”
