After gathering intelligence from spying on more than a million BlackBerry messages between alleged gangsters in Quebec, provincial police was able to circle up members of two violent mafia cells that are believed to have had control of a lucrative drug-trafficking ring. In addition to that, the groups were also involved in territorial disputes that sparked a wave of arsons as well as kidnappings going back to 2009.

Numerous raids were conducted on early Thursday morning that overall resulted in more than 31 arrests, all of whom are expected to face charges related to possession of weapons, drugs and explosives as well as forcible confinement, conspiracy and gangsterism. A clear majority of the arrested are from Montreal and the surrounding regions including the alleged leaders of one of the cells, namely Antonio and Roberto Bastone. One 22-year-old Ontario man from Barrie, Mikel Fosco, was also arrested. Meanwhile other arrested individuals were from the Quebec cities of Gatineau, Laval and Quebec City. Whereas police claims that three suspects are still on the loose.

The raids conducted on early Thursday morning primarily targeted two groups that sought greater control of the underworld in light of recent power struggle due to the arrest of mafia godfather, Vito Rizzuto, and a 2006 gang sweep in which 73 people were charged, including the father of godfather Nicolo Rizzuto. RCMP Insp. Michel Arcand mentioned on Thursday that “we were dealing with very dangerous . . . organized crime groups willing to do anything to achieve their goal.”
