Approximately 300 Liberals convened in an annual party meeting held in Gander this weekend. The newly chosen executive party Leader, Dwight Ball, outlined a more forceful approach of the party, as he asserted that the Liberals believe they are on the verge of forming the next government. According to Ball, it’s been a decade since Liberal supporters in this province expressed such political excitement and so all party members can sense that the times have changed.

Meanwhile on the other hand, the outgoing Liberal President Judy Morrow also reiterated that the party has turned a corner and success is within the grasp. Analysts claim that the delegates were largely confident and optimistic as the convention was primarily dedicated to election readiness. It was added that those days are gone when the party struggled to find quality candidates. Ball explained that even now, i.e. months and maybe a year from an election call, new and first time candidates are putting their names forward with two and three way nomination races in many districts.

Likewise, Party Leader Dwight Ball has become more critical in his attacks on the Tory record and incoming Premier Frank Coleman. According to Ball, the Tories have misspent $19-billion in oil royalties and Coleman wants to keep everything the same. In his campaign style speeches, Ball commented on broad policy issues that lacked detail, but may resonate with voters. He committed to reform MHA pensions and says a Liberal plan will ensure mental health is as important as physical health.
