The leadership Convention committee co-chairs of the Provincial PC party of Newfoundland and Labrador, Sheila Kelly-Blackmore and Tommy Williams, made an important announcement today as they unraveled a refurbished process for the party’s leadership race. Kelly-Blackmore alleged that “there is renewed interest in our party’s leadership process, and we look forward to a vigorous campaign as contenders vie to lead our party and our province.”
According to the new schedule, nomination form will be open for the position of PC party leader on Monday, after which a registration package will be available for each candidate. Thereafter, the nominations process will close July 7 and the delegate selection meetings will be held between July 14 and August 14. Henceforth, the PC leadership convention and annual general meeting will be held on Sept. 12-13 at the Delta Convention Centre in St. John’s and the PC leader will be elected by secret ballot on Sept. 13. Consequently, the earlier convention and AGM date of July 4-5 was cancelled.
Williams announced that “we encourage Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who support the principles and aims of our party to make a difference by either running for leader or participating in the delegate selection processes.” It was added that “people are eager to see the growth we have achieved as a province since 2003 continue.” On the other hand, PC party president, Cillian Sheahan, thanked Coleman for his participation in the process wished him and his family luck. Overall, the rules are almost the same as those that governed the earlier leadership process.
