A long-time member of the Progressive Conservative caucus in New Brunswick, Bev Harrison, has now announced his plans to seek an NDP nomination for the upcoming September’s provincial election. Currently, Harrison is representing the riding of Hampton-Kings as a Conservative MLA in the legislature but he now aims to seek the NDP nomination in the new riding of Hampton.
While making the announcement on Friday, Harrison stated that “I see a new NDP that has matured. It’s not the old party. It’s a party that has modernized, become more realistic and is offering real solutions.” Previously in May, the 72-year-old MP said that he was retiring, though he also announced not to seek re-election in his riding of Hampton-Kings. First elected as a PC member of the legislature in 1978, Harrison has been reelected six times since and sits a Conservative consecutively since 1999. In addition to that, he has also served as legislature’s Speaker for two terms.
Back in 2009, Harrison played an active role in trying to revitalize the Conservative Party’s youth membership. However, in his recent remarks he alleged that the party is a ‘top-down management’ sort of government. Speaking about the current premier, Harrison alleged that “David Alward is a very decent guy. He’s concerned of others, pleasant to talk to, he’s always concerned when people have a difficulty they weren’t expecting. And for that, he deserves all the respect anyone can give.”
