Administration of thirty-one municipalities in Manitoba have announced to have declared local states of emergency on Monday while flood protection measures were enacted in light of a weekend-long storm that battered southern Manitoba. According to an announcement by Manitoba, the Portage Diversion will be put into operation, while the Red River Floodway would be activated Tuesday at 9 a.m., and the Lake St. Martin channel would be re-opened Wednesday to assist in flooding throughout Parkland and southwestern Manitoba.

In his remarks, Emergency Measures Minister Steve Ashton mentioned that “our focus is on working with the local communities to deal with this situation.” He added that “as we look ahead, we’re using the tools that are available to us.” In addition to that, emergency measures executive director Lee Spencer alleged that were more than 200 evacuations in Manitoba, mostly in the southwestern corner of the province and on First Nations like Waywayseecappo, Sioux Valley, and Peguis. Ashoton explained “the southwest was already dealing with the impacts from flooding going back several weeks ago, and this is very much a combination of saturated ground conditions, very significant rainfall and record flows on streams and tributaries.” It was added that “the southwest has been particularly hard hit.”

Furthermore, Deloraine CAO Debbie Adams confirmed that “no residences are in huge risk right now,” and added that “we’re kind of keeping it at the outskirts of Deloraine. We’ve got a lot of equipment and a lot of manpower working, pumping water.”
