Sources have confirmed that the busy train route between Toronto and Montreal is completely shut down since the CN freight train derailed near Brockville at around 4:10 a.m. on Thursday morning. Consequently, all Via rail routes from Ottawa-Toronto and Toronto-Montreal have been completely suspended, while the passengers affected by the derailment are being transported by bus.

According to a Via ticket agent, no new bookings are being made for Ottawa-Toronto and Toronto-Montreal routes as of Thursday morning. In addition to that, the passengers who have already booked for either journey are being asked to either opt for a full refund or use the bus service. The ticket agent added that the passengers choosing to take the bus are being offered up to 50 per cent off at their next booking.

CN spokeswoman, Lindsay Fedchyshyn, confirmed that there were no injuries in the 26-car derailment and so far there is no report or expectancy of leaks or exposures of dangerous goods. It was explained that CN police and emergency crews are on the scene and will continue working for at least several more hours. Fedchyshyn assured that “we are in full response mode.” It was also explained that the 26 derailed train cars included two were fully-loaded automobile carriers, five contained carbon powder and 13 were unloaded fuel tanks. Although the fuel tanks are empty, Fedchyshyn confessed they may contain fuel residue but quickly added that no fuel leaks or exposures of the residue is expected to cause a dangerous situation.
