Parents of the five-year-old boy missing from 11 days, Nathan O’Brien, who disappeared with his grandparents, Alvin and Kathryn Liknes, held a joined community vigil on Thursday night while police continued to search for clues. The candlelight vigil was held at a community centre in Calgary’s Park Hill neighbourhood, where Nathan’s mother told the crowd that “I thank you dearly, from the bottom of our hearts, for being a part of this.” She added that “we’re very hopeful that they’re out there. There’s no doubt in our mind.”

Police is currently looking at a second dump site as of Thursday in order to find clues in the mysterious disappearance. The East Calgary Landfill was searched on early Thursday afternoon and the Spyhill Landfill in northwest Calgary the day before. According to the investigators, these landfill searches are standard procedure in major crime investigations.

In addition to the landfill sites, the investigators are also combing through a rural property since Friday for any sign of the couple or their grandson. Calgary police spokesperson, Kevin Brookwell, explained on Thursday that a “quantity of chemicals” was found at the farm due to which an ambulance and firefighters are stationed on the site since Wednesday for precautionary measures as police officers searched the property. He said that “at this time, we don’t know if it’s chemicals that are part of a typical farm operation or chemicals that could be used for something else,” Brookwell said. “It’s too early to speculate what those may be.”
