Pot activist Jodie Emery has announced to file the paperwork to run for the Liberal Party of Canada, evidently in support of Justin Trudeau’s resolve to legalize marijuana despite recent attacks from the Conservative Party. Even though the Liberal hierarchy is not so thrilled to have Ms. Emery as a candidate, the party’s decision to hold open nominations in all ridings’ implies that she is at least entitled to give it a shot and try to join Mr. Trudeau’s team for the next election.

According to Ms. Emery, she was contacted by the past-president and election readiness chair of the Vancouver East Federal Liberal Riding Association, Mark Elyas, and the association’s vice-president, Russ Miller, who inquired from her almost two months ago if she would consider becoming a candidate in the riding. She explained to have discussed matter with her husband, Marc Emery, who himself is a well-known Pot activist popular as the “Prince of Pot” for his relentless marijuana advocacy in Canada and the United States. After consulting him, Emery alleged that she decided to join the party last month and requested nomination papers about two weeks ago. Previously, Emery has run twice for the Green Party in B.C.’s two most recent provincial elections

A statement issued by Ms. Emery said that “we already knew we wanted to support the Liberals anyway … so for us, the opportunity of working with guys who actually worked on the [Liberal policy resolution to legalize and regulate marijuana], and putting our name toward the party, was just too good of an opportunity.”
