A new report issued by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) has found that the governments are making “short-sighted decisions” about sustaining Canada’s parks and so placing them at great risk. The report highlighted several decisions including British Columbia’s plan to change the Park Act to allow industrial research within park boundaries, a new resort set to be built at Maligne Lake in Alberta’s Jasper National Park and a two-decade-old “sleeping” plan in Newfoundland and Labrador to create new parks.

The report stated that “creating and protecting parks continues to be an uphill battle in much of the country.” It was added that “a common threat we found in reviewing progress in Canada’s parks this year is that many governments are making short-sighted decisions to prioritize industrial and commercial interests over the long term ecological, social and economic benefits that come from conserving nature in well-designed, well-protected parks.”

Parks program director at CPAWS, Alison Woodley, alleged that Canadians love their parks and there is strong evidence that they are beneficial for people and nature. He questioned in the report that “why is protecting Canada’s amazing nature within parks and other forms of protected areas so difficult to achieve when their benefits to nature, human health and the economy are so strong?” In addition to its reservations, the report adds a “good news” for parks, highlighting Manitoba’s proposal to create a new provincial park to protect polar bears and other northern species and momentum to create a protected area at the East Arm of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.
