In response to the recent event of a beloved Toronto teacher being shot dead in Toronto, mayoral candidate Olivia Chow has unveiled her strategy to help curb gun violence in the city. Addressing reporters at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Chow stressed that the city needs to raise voice for gun control in city hall and vowed to promote the cause at the federal level for a ban on handguns.

In addition to that, the mayoral candidate alleged that Toronto should speak out about stemming the flow of illegal guns at Canadian borders. She mentioned that “there is no reason why anyone needs a handgun in a big city like ours” adding that “Wednesday is the anniversary of the Danzig shooting… We don’t want to see more tragedies happen.”

Chow made a convincing speech at Ephraim’s Place, i.e. a North York community centre named after 11-year-old Ephraim Brown who was killed by a stray bullet at a cousin’s birthday party in 2007. Chow also slammed Mayor Rob Ford in her speech, criticizing his opposition to the long-gun registry. She said that “in the last few years there has not been any voice for tightening gun control… and it is about time we changed that.” Upon identification by reporters that stats indicate a decline in gun crime, Chow replied that that still more can be done to prevent “senseless tragedies.” Additionally, Chow shared the idea of expanding police and community partnerships, including partnerships with mental health services.

  1. I’d be interested to hear Rob Ford’s take on this issue, seeing as the money he gave to gangs to purchase his crack and pot was almost certainly used to buy handguns.
