In light of no schedule of any talks between teachers and government, along with a statement from B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong confirming there will be no back to school legislation for teachers, parents are becoming increasingly concerned. The almost month-long strike between teachers and government is not showing any signs of ending any time soon since neither side is signaling intention to resume negotiations.

According to a recent statement issued by B.C. Finance Minister, Mike de Jong, he hinted that there is a possibility of the strike carrying on past September. A representative of “Parents for B.C.,” Lisa Cable, have expressed increasing dissatisfaction, adding that “there’s so much bad blood over the years, but at some point someone needs to stand up and say ‘We’re the bigger group, we’re going to say what’s gone on in the past has gone on, it’s now time to make this work’. I don’t think picket lines in September or forcing teachers back to work are a good resolution for anyone.”

In addition to that, Cable further mentioned that “legislating people back to work is very touchy and so I can understand the government’s unwillingness to do that and probably there are many teachers that wouldn’t want that to happen. But at the same time, this can’t go on perpetually. Students need to be in school and to be able to start school in September like they’re supposed to is what most families want.”
