Vancouver’s Catholic school district has become one of its kind in Canada by formulating a transgender policy. An 11 year old transgender girl, Tracey Wilson, previously launched a human rights complaint after her school failed to accommodate her. In response to her complaint, the Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese assured that she will be taken care of.

According to Tracey’s mother, Michelle, “it’s definitely provided us with a sense of closure on the issue, and has helped empower Tracey to know that her bravery has helped make lives better for future kids like her to come.” Furthermore, Wilson’s lawyer Barbara Findlay alleged that the decision is significant, adding that “the school board has agreed that they have a policy which will permit trans students to be accommodated, right up to and including changing pronouns and names, if that’s what their physicians recommend, and their case management group concludes.” Wilson shifted to a public school two years ago and alleged that her experience caused her stress and anxiety.

Consequently, the archdiocese policy now claims that all students requesting accommodation will be assigned a case management team, which will have to come up with a plan to give the students what they need. The plan would include using a student’s preferred name, gender pronoun, choice of uniform and use of appropriate washroom. Tracey hoped that the policy would prevent other transgender students from dealing with the stress and anxiety that she had to experience.
