More than 2,500 residents have been asked to vacate their homes in numerous neighborhoods in British Columbia’s Okanagan region due to fast-moving wildfire that is bringing disastrous flames. There are almost 140 wildfires burning in the province but this one broke out in West Kelowna on early Thursday afternoon. However, Central Okanagan Emergency Operations reported that it has expanded exponentially to encompass more than 200 hectares in size as of late evening.

According to operations centre spokesman, Bruce Smith, there are currently at least 12 aircraft, 11 ground crew from the province’s Wildfire Management Branch, along with firefighters from departments in West Kelowna, Lake Country, the City of Kelowna and Peachland that are battling the flames. Smith elucidated that “we have just over 1,100 homes that are now evacuated,” adding that “we’re estimating that’s about 2,500 residents.” In addition that, the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations later updated to have asked another 150 homes to vacate the area, increasing the total to have reached up to 1,250 homes. Whereas, the emergency reception centre was also moved from a local church to a secondary school.

Westside-Kelowna MLA and B.C. Premier, Christy Clark, mentioned in a statement that she is constantly monitoring the situation and plans to reach the area as soon as possible. Additionally, she also thanked first responders for keeping people and their property safe and said that “our community is strong and will come together to ensure our friends and neighbours have the support they need in this difficult time.”
