24-year-old Canadian medical student, Andrei Anghel, was planning to have the time of his life with his girlfriend in Bali as he planned the five weeks’ vacation trip. Both had just finished their second year of medical school and were flying out of Amsterdam when he sent a message to his sister, Alexandra, in Edmonton.

26-year-old Ms. Anghel remembers that “he said, ‘hey, good morning, the next time I message you, we’ll be in Bali.’” Although she saw a report of a plane crash the next day, she didn’t know that her brother was in it since she was unaware of the airline her brother had been flying or that they were connecting in Kuala Lumpur. She said that “I never put two and two together until his friends started sending me messages.” Later on the news was confirmed by the police and her parents, Sorin and Anca Anghel, were told on late Thursday evening in Ajax, Ont., as Ms. Anghel took a red-eye flight to be with them.

During an interview from Ajax on Friday, Ms. Anghel said that “it’s obviously a huge shock,” “and I don’t think we’re really ready to answer any of these questions because it hasn’t really sunk in. It’s all happening just very fast.” Ms. Anghel remembered her brother saying that “he got tall one day,” “and then I wasn’t his big sister anymore. I was always his little sister after that.” She added that “he was an amazing person. He was the smartest, most driven person I’ve ever met. He’s in med school, went straight out of high school into college, biomedical sciences, then straight into med school. He just, he wanted to change the world.”
