Firefighters from Other Provinces Summoned to Help Battle B.C. Wildfires

British Columbia is soon expected to see additional firefighters coming from all across the country to help the province manage dozens of wildfires spreading throughout the province. Mostly, firefighter are arriving from the central and eastern Canada over the weekend to aid the province take control of 160 burning fires, out of which 17 are considered major and a dozen are considered to be threatening homes.

The almost 200 additional firefighters coming from out of the province on Saturday and Sunday will join the already working more than 1,500 provincial firefighters. Majority of these out-of-province firefighters are coming from Ontario, while 40 are coming from Quebec and 20 each from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The worse wildfire has triggered a state of emergency in West Kelowna, and placed almost 2,500 residents under an evacuation order along with another 150 homes on evacuation alert. Meanwhile B.C. Wildfire Management confirmed that The Smith Creek fire has spread to about 250 hectares but is only 20 per cent contained.

The representative of the area in the B.C. legislature, B.C. Premier Christy Clark, visited the evacuated residents on Friday and alleged that the $63 million allotted by the province for fighting wildfires has already been exhausted. However, she highlighted that “the thing people should know is we are not going to stop spending money because it’s expensive.” Additionally, Clark vowed that “we are going to do everything we can to protect people and property around the province.”
