RCMP Charges Burnaby Man Accused of Joining Syrian Terrorists

RCMP has charged a British Columbia man, namely 25-year-old Hasibullah Yusufzai, under a new anti-terrorism law for allegedly leaving the country to join Islamist fighters in Syria. Cpl. David Falls revealed that it will be the first time that someone will be tried for the recently implemented Criminal Code legislation aimed to fight terrorism.

According to the police, Mr. Yusufzai committed an offence for the benefit of a terrorist group or was directed by or associated with such a group. A press release mentioned that “the individual is known to have travelled to Syria to join Islamist fighters,” adding that he allegedly left Canada on Jan. 21. It was highlighted that “this case underscores the reality that there are individuals in Canada who have embraced the extremist ideology and who are willing to act upon it.” The RCMP added that “more importantly, it highlights the fact that there are new tools within the Criminal Code that enhance the RCMP’s ability to counter terrorist activity.”

Upon calling at Yusufzai’s home in Burnaby, a women replied who first said that he wasn’t there and then said she didn’t speak English. Meanwhile, Hasibullah Yusufzai’s brother Roh Yusufzai stated that his brother wasn’t in Syria but was in Turkey for the month of Ramadan. Although Roh claims that his brother is incapable of joining a terrorist group, the RCMP says that it building a case and “is concerned about Canadians travelling abroad to participate in terrorist-related criminal activity.”
