Ford Fest is expected to have thousands of guests in Scarborough on Friday night. The annual barbeque hosted by Mayor Rob Ford is being held in Thomson Memorial Park at 5 p.m. this year. Speaking before the event on Friday, Ford mentioned that “I welcome everyone to Ford Fest tonight.” Ford mentioned that “some people want to make this political, that’s fine, come out and enjoy yourselves – free food, free drinks, free rides like we’ve been doing since 1995,” adding that “I invite everybody, everybody can come out and enjoy themselves.”

Ford brothers have earnestly promised not to do politics at this free barbecue despite complaints by other mayoral candidates who object issuance of a city park permit for what they maintain is a campaign event. Election laws disallow candidates to use city facilities, including parks, for campaign events and city officials have confirmed to be present at the event to ensure the parks bylaws are obeyed during the event.

The city’s executive director of municipal licensing and standards, Tracey Cook, mentioned that we will be two bylaw officers and a supervisor at the event along with parks staff. Cook stated that “one of the conditions in the permit speaks to no signage and also speaks to not handing out political or campaign materials – that’s a condition of the permit.” According to bylaw officers, signs or materials with “electioneering” type of language like “vote for” or re-elect” would be hunted and “if it simply says, Ford Nation, Ford Fest, (or it is a) business card or magnet that’s considered informational and that is fine.”
