The Albertan opposition Wildrose party has claimed to have caught the Alberta government breaking a promise as it alleged that top managers for the government have secretly been given a 7% pay raise. Wildrose finance critic, Rob Anderson, pointed out that the pay raise is against a government promise made on February 19, 2013, when it announced a three year wage freeze for senior government officials.

Mr. Anderson stated that “that week, through an order in council the PC’s approved a 7% salary hike for the highest level government managers many of whom are political appointees.” He elucidated that “these include all deputy ministers, officials in the public affairs bureau and all of Alberta’s foreign representatives including unbelievably Gary Mar.” Anderson alleged that “it’s a head scratcher.” He alleged that “this is an opportunity for the government to try to push the reset button with Albertans during their leadership to show, look we’re different, we’re doing things differently under new leadership. It’s going to be a hard case to make even with whoever the new lead is, probably Mr. Prentice that these folks have changed at all.”

Additionally, Anderson speculated that “it’s pretty clear to me that this is a way of getting a quick pay raise through before the new leader has to take ownership of it.” “It’s a daft political move. I don’t know why they’re doing it. Some of our first questions to Mr. Prentice will be when are you going to reverse this decision, and show that you’re different?”
