The creator of Mr. Big tactic, British Columbia RCMP sergeant Al Haslett, has expressed his disappointment over recent Supreme Court ruling that believes the officers will make due. Retired RCMP officer who developed Mr. Big tactic over 25 years ago said that “I think they’re overreacting.”

In his remarks, Al Haslett stated that “it is not a bunch of rogue cowboys out there doing this technique. It’s scrutinized, there are checks and balances in place. There never was any issues. They’ve changed the goalposts, but i’m confident investigators will be able to adapt.” The Supreme Court announced to uphold a previous ruling that allowed a new trial for Nelson Hart, i.e. a suspect who confessed to killing his young daughters in 2002 using Mr. Big. Additionally, the Supreme Court announced to have had imposed new restrictions on the practice. The court ruling now bounds officers to prove the admissibility of confessions acquired with the tactic, while advising all judges to carefully consider the circumstances in which the confession was made.

Haslett is credited to have founded the technique over a series of cases with Peter Marsh in the late 80s and early 90s. Haslett alleged that “it’s one of the strongest tools to solve murders.” With apparent grief in his voice, Haslett stated that “unfortunately we have to live by it, but I’m confident that the people who want to do the job will continue to do the job.”
