One of Toronto’s champion oyster shuckers have managed to win the title of Guinness World Record holder. The 10-person team of Canadian oyster shuckers, including Eamon Clark who works at Rodney’s Oyster House, managed to set the world record on Thursday night for the most oysters opened in one hour.

According to the judges, the team successfully opened 8,840 oysters in one hour during the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival in Tyne Valley, P.E.I., beating the record of 8,472 oysters set earlier by a French team in 2002. Clark, who personally opened 1,047 oysters, alleged that the oysters shucked in Thursday night’s record breaking went into a giant batch of chowder. Clark stated on Friday that “it’s kind of cool to be in the Guinness Book of World Records. Not every day does something like that happen.”

Additionally, Clark alleged that there was real fellowship between Clark and the other members of the record-breaking shucking team from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. It was added that normally, the shuckers compete against each other and it was a nice change to work with one another. Clark said that “it was a great experience, to be with everybody to do that.” The room was filled with suspense after the hour was up, since no one knew for sure whether or not the team had achieved their goal. Eventually, when Guinness Book of World Records adjudicator Philip Robertson made the announcement, the shuckers hugged and sprinkled beer over one another.
