The provincial and federal governments unanimously announced on Tuesday to contribute up to extra $102 million for affordable housing in Nova Scotia over the next five years. The funding is seen as an extension to the existing bilateral agreement, which saw both level of governments splitting the investment evenly.

According to a statement issued by the Federal Justice Minister, Peter MacKay, he explained that the money would be essentially used for new construction, renovation, home ownership assistance, rent supplements, shelter allowances or other forms of assistance for low-income residents. He explained that “at the end of the day, this is really all about more than just putting a roof over someone’s head, but improving the stability and certainty that comes with housing. It’s about a better quality of life for all.” MacKay added that “when people are in secure housing, it is much easier to obtain education, upgrade skills, look for a job, care for loved ones, live a healthier life and contribute productively to society.”

The original federal-provincial joint agreement was announced in 2011 and settled at $61 million investment in affordable housing in Nova Scotia from 2011 to 2014. Now the agreement has been extend to 2019. The provincial Community Services minister, Joanne Bernard, alleged that “the waiting list has been an ongoing issue in Nova Scotia for many years where it’s at a bottleneck, so I’m looking for new, creative ways of moving people into housing.” She added that “this extension will help us provide more affordable housing, improve our existing housing stock and provide more assistance to low-income Nova Scotians struggling to pay rent.”
