Via rail is once again encountering delays on five passenger trains on the busy Toronto-Montreal corridor, which were stopped on Wednesday due to an accident involving a freight train and another vehicle at a train crossing on Tate Road in Quinte West, Ont., near Belleville. Ontario Provincial Police has confirmed the news about one death, though the victim is not yet identified.

Although the accident has caused serious delays and problems for passengers en route from Ottawa to Toronto and Toronto to Montreal, it does not affect trains between Ottawa and Montreal. According to a Via rail spokeswoman, Mylène Bélanger, five trains have been stopped in Cobourg, Kingston and Belleville, so the company is working to provide alternate transportation for the passengers. She alleged that “we have installed our contingency plan” and so the passengers will soon be offered transportation on motor coaches, though she refused to comment on how long the trains would be delayed.

One of the halted passengers travelling from Toronto to Ottawa on Wednesday, Rebecca Rowe, revealed that her train was stopped at Cobourg at around 11 a.m. She alleged that the passengers were informed about the delay being caused by a freight train accident and were let out of the train. She said though “we were wandering around the platform for a bit,” soon a Via official told passengers to get back on the train. Rowe revealed that the passengers are being told to expect up to a three-hour delay, and were not provided details about alternate transportation more than an hour after the train stopped.
