Ottawa Fire Services recently revealed that a guilty plea to fire code violations by an Ottawa landlord have triggered a total of $75,000 in penalties. According to the Ottawa Fire Services, they owner of 16 rental unit locations across the city, Saickley Enterprises Ltd., confessed to 120 convictions against eight defendants on July 24 and plead guilty to the charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

The properties across the city were investigated by the fire service after it looked into a high-rise fire on March 12, 2013 at 371 Gilmour St. One of the resident allegedly jumped from the second or third story window in that fire and received treatment at a hospital in serious condition. In its press release on Thursday, OFS mentioned that “following the suppression of the fire, an OFS investigator examined the premises and found numerous Fire Code violations throughout the building.” OFS alleged that “the building is owned by Saickley Enterprises Ltd. since 2008.” Contently, OFS added that most of the other buildings inspected by OFS have been high-rise residential rental buildings. The court ruled to impose a $60,000 fine against the landlord in addition to a $15,000 victim fine surcharge.

In its remarks, OFS stressed that “having an approved fire safety plan that is regularly reviewed is a good way to remind building owners and staff of these responsibilities.” It was mentioned that “OFS also encourages residents to file complaints if they feel that there are any fire safety issues in their buildings.”
