The NDP have once again officially been reprimanded for misusing parliamentary resources for the second time in just three months. According to a formal decision by the Board of Internal Economy on Tuesday, the all-party closed-door committee concluded that the NDP’s use of satellite offices in Quebec was not properly authorized.

The decision asks the official opposition to repay an undetermined amount of money, in lieu of the public money used to pay the salaries of 28 employees who worked in those offices since 2011. In a news conference on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the committee, Conservative MP John Duncan, mentioned that “I think the NDP have consistently disguised – misled the House administration as to where these employees were located.” Duncan stated that “these employees were working in an office not authorized by the members’ bylaws. The board had determined tax dollars used to pay these employees were not a proper use of parliamentary resources.” Additionally, Duncan also pointed out that the committee is looking into the possibility of parliamentary staff in those satellite offices working for an NDP byelection campaign in 2013. The committee will pass those concerns on to Elections Canada.

Whereas on the other hand, the New Democrats have reasserted their stance that no “public funds were spent inappropriately” and employees at those regional offices were undoubtedly performing parliamentary work alone. A statement posted on the party’s website accuses the Conservative and Liberal party dominated committee of playing political games as part of a “kangaroo court.”
