Long-time North York councilor, John Filion, has announced to publicly support Toronto’s mayoral candidate, John Tory, for the key position, alleging that he is the right man to end “the internal war” on city council and unite politicians from all parts of Toronto together.

While openly supporting Tory on Friday morning, Filion stressed that “we’ve had two warring camps, people forced into one or the other and taking positions they didn’t agree with.” He mentioned that “it’s such a poisoned environment down there” since council members are forced to join one “gang” or the other. Accompanying Mr. Filion at the press conference on Sheppard-Yonge Station, Tory promised to stop the division of left-right and other “artificial distinctions” in city politics. Before entering politics, Mr. Filion served a North York school trustee for nine years. Later he joined the former city’s council in 1990 and continued repressing the fast-growing Willowdale since the megacity’s amalgamation in 1998.

According to Filion, he doesn’t always chooses a candidate for the mayoral race, pointing out that he “sat the last one out,” after endorsing David Miller in 2003. Tory and Miller both ran unsuccessfully that year. Additionally, Tory was inquired if other councillors were willing to openly announce their support for him, to which he replied that “I have quite a few indicating they’re going to be supportive.” Upon inquiry about why he didn’t back Tory’s rival Olivia Chow or someone else, Filion alleged that “John is the right guy” who can get all parts of the city behind him.
