Police has laid charges against the 35-year-old Halifax man, Jason Keith Gillespie, arrested for carrying threatening-looking pellet guns on Tuesday morning. Mr. Gillespie spent the night in custody and is now expected to face charges of mischief and possession of weapons dangerous to the public in Halifax provincial court this morning.

The incident was reported by two residents in the area of Westridge Drive and the Mainland North Linear Parkway, who called the police around 9:24 a.m. and warned about seeing a man in camouflage clothing carrying one or two long guns. Police arrived immediately and took control of the area by calling out their dog unit, using emergency response team and closing some streets to traffic. The suspect came out of the woods and turned himself in to police at 10:24 a.m. Police found that the suspect was only carrying three Airsoft brand guns that shoot plastic pellets and were designed to resemble a long gun, assault rifle and pistol.

In his remarks, Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Pierre Bourdages stated that “as far as we can tell he was going there for some target practice.” However, he justified the charges by explaining that “the section of the Criminal Code (of Canada) also includes imitation weapons.” Bourdages confessed that he is not sure what kind of penalty Gillespie could face if he’s convicted. He also stressed that “enthusiasts, people that actually use paint balls, Airsoft (guns) have to realize that not everybody will understand that they’re carrying fake weapons … then police have to investigate that as such.”
