Calgary’s local Islamic leader, Syed Soharwardy, revealed that he was condemned this week for being a bad Muslim by a Canadian ISIS fighter, but he stressed that it has only amplified his belief and he has decided to embark on a hunger strike to protest the extremist group’s actions and bring awareness to its recruitment of local youths.

Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, 59-year-old Soharwardy, mentioned in his remarks over Facebook chat on Wednesday night that the ISIS fighter alleged that “he was trying to teach me Islam, that speaking up against ISIS was wrong.” Whereas, Soharwardy stressed that “their view of Islam and the Koran is absolutely 180 degrees different from what most Muslims believe.” According to Soharwardy, the recent ISIS beheading of American journalist James Foley has prompted him to begin a 48-hour hunger strike from Friday onwards. The imam explained that he will only ingest water and remain most of that time at an Islamic centre at 421 Riverfront Ave. S.E.

In addition to that, Soharwardy stated that he welcomes dialogue with Muslim youth who might be tempted to head to Syria and Iraq to fight for ISIS. Meanwhile, three Calgarians who volunteered with the extremists have recently been killed in action in Syria and Iraq while the city’s considered a recruitment ground for them. Soharwardy stated that “this whole epidemic of Muslim youth getting involved is quite alarming…I will reach out to as many of them as I can, especially those on the borderline.”
