A decommissioned gas station in Metcalfe faced a serious blaze on Monday morning, prompting an inspection by The Ottawa Police Arson Unit. Ottawa Fire official, Marc Messier, confirmed that fire crews responded to a call from the former MacEwan gas station at Victoria and Yorks Corners around 4 a.m.

Messier explained that “we received several calls advising us that a decommissioned gas station was on fire that also has an apartment attached to it.” He added that “the person or persons who lived there did get out safely.” Messier alleged that the firefighters adopted a defensive attack on the building after observing a possibility of roof collapsing. Meanwhile, the second-alarm fire caused in almost 21 trucks to respond. Meanwhile, Hydro One proactively shut off power to the property, while Enbridge shut off gas.

Whereas, police officials closed Victoria Street from Yorks Corners Road to 9th Line Road and Yorks Corners Road is closed from Pana Road to Ray Wilson Road, which are still expected to last for several hours. Messier also confirmed that there were no injuries in the blaze, which is expected to have begun in a donation bin behind the building. He mentioned that “we have called in the Arson Unit, not because we feel it’s suspicious, just because some of the circumstances behind the fire,” adding that “it appears as though the fire started at the exterior of the building in a drop-off box for clothing, so it still may be accidental as result of a cigarette or other ignition source.”
