Five arrested in car thefts in Edmonton

On the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 02, 2010, Downtown Division police officers arrested five people within a 24-hour period for crimes related to vehicle theft.

Police were proactively patrolling problem areas of downtown known for a high number of vehicle thefts and theft from vehicles when the arrests were made. In three separate incidents three males and two females were arrested and charged with numerous offences ranging from theft under $5000, possession of stolen property, and possession of break-in instruments.

“Theft of vehicles and vehicle break-ins can happen so quickly, they are difficult to police,” says Supt. David Veitch of downtown division. “We are very pleased to have made five arrests, but it can’t be stressed enough how important it is for citizens to remove all valuables from their vehicle at all times, and ensure their vehicle has appropriate anti-theft devices, such as a steering wheel Club.”

With Christmas season approaching shoppers are also reminded not to leave any gifts in their vehicle.

Codielyn Marie Maki, 24, is charged with theft under $5000, possession of break-in instruments, Henry Jason Hawkins, 27, charged with theft under $5000, possession of stolen property, intent to avoid arrest, utter a forged document and possession of stolen credit card (x 5), Corey Daniel Shank, 41, charged with possession of break-in instruments, Chase Eli Adams, 27, and Catherine Rita McLachlan, 25, charged with possession of stolen property (x 2) and possession of break-in tools.
